Oven-Baked Plantain Fries

My childhood was filled with a lot of amazing memories. A lot of those memories are centered around food (no shocker there huh). I pretty much grew up on plantains. We ate them all the time in many different ways. Although I don’t have them as much now, when I do, I absolutely love making these oven-baked plantain fries.

Plantains are so versatile and delicious. They can be utilized in so many ways; from appetizers to sides dishes and even dessert. Of course, my favorite way to utilize plantains is serving them as appetizers. And this oven-baked plantain fries fit that bill just perfectly. They are delicious and so easy it’s foolproof.

Of course you can enjoy plantains in a multitude of other ways. You can steam them, roast them or slice them thinly and deep fry them to make plantain chips. Whichever way you choose to enjoy plantains, it will always be a good choice.

You can certainly choose to add more spices/flavor combinations to your plantain fries. But, I prefer to keep them simple with just salt, pepper and garlic powder (try the Balanced Bites TRIFECTA spice blend). The idea is to keep the flavor on the fries simple so they pair well with whatever you choose to dip them in.

How to enjoy Oven-Baked Plantain Fries:

  • As a snack: Plantain fries make the perfect snack for the kids and the adults alike. Serve them with guacamole or ketchup.
  • On the side: They also make the perfect side dish along with dinner. Good carbs the kids will love.
  • Loaded fries: Add some bacon or ground beef and finish it melted cheese for a delicious and comforting movie night favorite.

Do I use green or ripe plantains to make fries? Well, the answer is pretty simple; whatever you like. I prefer to use semi-ripe (with yellow skin) plantains. Green to semi-ripe plantains are the best choice for plantain fries and chips. At this stage, the flesh of the plantain is still a bit bland and starchy so it will soak up whatever flavors you add to it and it will hold up better when baked.
